Project description

The Howard County, Maryland, Compost Facility at Alpha Ridge Landfill is a 500-acre site with 190 acres dedicated to landfilling. The materials produced are a revenue generator for the County.

DFI is providing Resident Construction Inspection (RCI) services for this multi-phase environmental project. The project includes, but is not limited to, clearing, grading, road construction, concrete work, storm drains, mechanical equipment assembly, landscaping, water and sewer installation, electrical and fiber optic conduit and utility installation. Environmental work includes Storm Water Management (SWM), sediment control and stabilization.

DFI is providing RCI services for 10 additional concrete bunkers with new moisture and odor control systems, as well as enhanced water systems, related roads and processing pads, among other upgrades to the facility. The facility expansion doubled capacity and is designed to compost materials such as yard trimmings, food scraps and manure. Those involved in the Feed the Green Bin Program are providing compostable material.

The project was honored by Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) with a 2021 Award of Excellence Green/Sustainability/Environmental Award.
